The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a liberating experience. The story revolves around a young man named Santiago and his quest for worldly treasure. 

Santiago a shepherd, knows how to read and wants to travel the world. He keeps gazing his sheep until one day he decides to sell his sheep. He encounters a gypsy woman and a king that day.

The King and the gypsy women suggest Santiago follow his omens and go in search of a treasure. That is where Santiago's path to liberation starts.

Santiago follows his Omens and decides to travel across the Sahara desert to reach the great Egyptian Pyramids. It is where the gypsy woman had said the treasure lies. The Alchemist is about his journey in search of the treasure, his encounters with people from various walks of life, his struggles, his realizations, the life lessons.

Coelho also tells us about the importance of love. If you truly love someone you'd be willingly supporting their dreams. When Santiago meets a woman in the desert and knows that she's the one, he decides to give up on his treasure hunt. Then he meets an Alchemist who tells him that true love is all about supporting each other dreams. 

If you truly desire for something and are willing to undergo any amount of suffering to achieve that thing, the whole universe will also put its efforts into helping you achieve it.

In one way The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho is a self-help book that helps us understand the true essence of the quote "Follow your Dreams". It also suggests that sometimes what you are looking for may be right in front of your eyes but you may not notice it until the right time comes.
