A Thousand Splendid Suns is a book that'll definitely move you to tears. It did the same to me.

Set from1960s to 1990s, in the backdrop of Afghanistan's occupation from the Soviet Union to the Taliban Control,  A Thousand Splendid Suns By Khaled Hosseini narrates the struggles of Afghan women and their lives in the war-ridden country.

The main plot revolves around Mariam and Laila, two women, their marital lives, their struggle for survival in the war-torn country.

The older woman Mariam labeled a harami ( an illegitimate child), lives in the outskirts of the city with her mother. She keeps waiting for her father's weekly visits though her mother tries to make her understand that after all, she is a harami and haramis aren't valued in the society. Mariam keeps looking for love in her father but doesn't get it.

Later Mariam is forced to marry a man called Rasheed, who is 20 years older than her after her mother's suicide. She gives birth to a child through her marriage with Rasheed. Though Rasheed seems to be a kind man at the beginning, he starts showing his true colors after a series of miscarriages to Mariam.

The other story is about Laila, a young girl. Laila has two brothers whom the war takes away, lives with her parents. She is deprived of her mother's affection. Laila has a young friend, her first love. Laila agrees to marry Rasheed under unavoidable circumstances.

Both Mariam and Laila suffer domestic abuse. The author narrates the story in their perspective. Their struggles, their kept secrets, their desire to create a new life for themselves and the consequences of the war on the lives of the ordinary is what this book is all about.

A Thousand Splendid Suns By Khaled Hosseini moves you and at times tears you apart. It takes you through an emotional path wherein you identify yourself with the struggles of these women.
